Photos by Jenn Farrington Original artwork within a spa setting can make quite a statement, but it can also be costly. Sharōn Ronen found a way around this problem. The founder/CEO of Skin Haven Spa Studio (skinhaven.com) seeks out local artists and hangs their work on her spa’s walls. It gives the space a creative vibe while promoting talented, lesser- known artists.
"We’ve been doing this since we opened in 2005," Ronen says. The artwork, which so far has been paintings and photography, is displayed throughout the spa. Ronen finds up-and-coming, California-based artists through arts publications, online sources, referrals and her personal network. Not only does the work get seen, but it’s also sold at the spa. In January, Skin Haven held its first retrospective, which showcased pieces from past artists plus a few new ones. Typically, artwork is switched out every three to four months, but Ronen "might keep this group up longer because there’s such a lovely variety." A Friday evening opening is held for each artist. Guests can mingle, chat with the artist, partake in wine and cheese, and get a gift card for 20% off their first appointment at Skin Haven. It helps the art community, but does it benefit business? "It brings in new people via the artist’s invitees," Ronen says. "They join our email list, most return to get a service and then they tell their friends about us."
